YapLink: Privacy Policy

Last updated: 12 September 2026

YapLink lets two or more people talk to each other across languages. When you speak, your phone sends the audio to our relay server, which translates it and sends the spoken translation to the other people in your room. This policy explains exactly what is handled and what is not.

What the app collects

What the app does not collect

Recording and retention

Your conversations are not recorded. Audio and the text transcribed from it are held in memory only for the seconds it takes to translate and deliver them, and are then discarded. We do not write conversation audio or transcripts to disk or to any database. Captions shown on screen live only in your app and disappear when the call ends. Room codes and display names exist only while the room is in use, and the room is deleted after it is empty.

Who else processes your audio

We use Microsoft Azure Speech as a processor to perform speech recognition, translation, and speech synthesis. Your audio is sent to Microsoft for that purpose. See the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

If you have chosen to be heard in your own voice, we also use Fish Audio to synthesise that voice. Your voice recording and the translated text to be spoken are sent to Fish Audio for that purpose, and for no other. See the Fish Audio Privacy Policy. If you never record a voice, nothing is ever sent to Fish Audio.

The app asks for your agreement to all of this before it sends anything, on a screen shown the first time you open it. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with anyone beyond the two processors named here.

Advertising

The free app shows banner ads supplied by Google AdMob, which may use a device advertising identifier to select and measure them. Your conversations, your audio and your voice recording are never used for advertising and are never sent to an advertising service. A one-time in-app purchase removes ads permanently. See how Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.

Analytics and ad measurement

The iOS and Android apps use Firebase Analytics to collect app launches, sessions, engagement, device and app information, and approximate campaign attribution. We use this information to understand whether YapLink is working reliably and which product or marketing changes help people use it. Firebase Analytics does not receive conversation audio, captions, translated text, display names, room codes, feedback messages, or the email address entered on the feedback screen.

On the YapLink website, Google Ads measurement is disabled by default for visitors in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland. If you accept optional cookies, Google may receive page visits, clicks on the App Store or Google Play buttons, campaign parameters, and basic browser or device information. Google may also use cookies or advertising identifiers for attribution. Advertising personalization remains disabled. We use this information to understand which ads lead people to download YapLink. We never send conversation audio, captions, translated text, display names, or room codes to analytics.

See Google's Privacy Policy. You can reject optional cookies and continue using the website normally. To decide whether the consent prompt is required, the website asks country.is for the visitor's country. The lookup receives the visitor's IP address, returns only the country code to YapLink's page, and is not used by YapLink for any other purpose.

Security

Connections between the app and our server use TLS (wss://). Credentials for the translation service are held only on the server and are never placed in the app.

Everyone in the room can hear you

This should be obvious, but: anything you say while unmuted is translated and played to the other people in your room, and shown to them as a caption. Use the mute button when you do not want to be heard.

Children

YapLink is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Your rights

Because we do not retain your conversations or hold an account for you, there is no stored personal data for us to export or delete. Uninstalling the app removes everything it keeps on your device. If you have questions, contact us at the address below.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new date at the top.
